Autism research

An autism screening is a psychological assessment of the presence or absence of an autism spectrum disorder (ASD). An autism spectrum disorder is characterized by problems in social interaction and communication with other people. It is a disorder that is present from early childhood and persists for life. By "spectrum" is meant that the autistic disorder can manifest itself in various ways, ranging from mild, moderate to severe.

The examination includes a DSM-5 interview, a developmental history based on the ATG questionnaire and various cognitive function tests. In order to determine whether complaints were already present in childhood, part of the interview is conducted -if possible- with a parent, partner or neighbor of the person concerned.

Combination with psychiatric examination

An important requirement for the existence of an autism spectrum disorder is that the problems outlined are not explained by another cause, such as a personality disorder, schizophrenia or a somatic condition. For a definitive judgment regarding the presence or absence of an autism spectrum disorder, current guidelines therefore recommend combining the examination with a psychiatric examination or a Psychiatric examination.

How does an autism (ASD) screening proceed?

Application

Once we receive the request for a neurological consultation, we will contact the person requesting the examination. within one business day to schedule the examination.

The examination

The ASD examination consists of two parts. In the first part, a detailed interview with the psychologist takes place. During the second part of the examination, a number of tests and questionnaires are administered. These measure cognitive functions such as flexibility, planning and initiative, as well as the ability to move and empathize with (the feelings of) another person. In order to determine whether complaints were already present in childhood, part of the interview is -if possible- conducted with a parent, partner or neighbor of the person concerned.

The report

The findings are presented in a report. This is sent to the applicant for the study. If the applicant is not a physician, the report will not be sent to the applicant but to the physician listed in the request form.

Right of inspection and correction

The report is subject to inspection and correction rights. This means that, before sending the report to the applicant, the person concerned receives a copy of the draft report and can indicate whether there is an incorrect representation of facts. Depending on the context in which the examination takes place, the person concerned can also block the transmission of the report.

Additional neuropsychological examination in autism research

There may be a need for further objectification of cognitive symptoms. For example, with regard to memory, attention and concentration. A neuropsychological examination serves as the "gold standard" in this regard. This also applies when symptom validity is in doubt, as in the case of underachievement, symptom aggravation or malingering.
