Janine has worked as a psychiatrist for 20 years, including the past five years at Sazyes. Here she performs independent psychiatric expertises in addition to her work in mental health. "During my training I was already interested in expert appraisals, but due to the busyness in the hospital at the time, it didn't materialize. When I transferred, I seized the opportunity after all," Janine says.
What is a psychiatric examination?
A Psychiatric examination is an independent examination by a psychiatrist who plays no role in the person's treatment. Based on an extensive preliminary interview with a psychologist, information from previous treatment procedures and an independent assessment, the psychiatrist prepares an objective report. This report answers questions such as:
- Does anyone have psychiatric symptoms that fit a particular diagnosis?
- Which treatment is most appropriate?
- What is the prognosis?
- What are the limitations in daily functioning?
Janine explains that at Sazyes, a psychiatrist and psychologist always work together. "The psychologist does a background check beforehand, so that when I talk to the client, I am already well prepared."
When is a Psychiatric examination used?
A Psychiatric examination is often used when someone has been out of work for a long time due to psychological symptoms and recovery is stagnant. Such an expertise can also play a crucial role in cases of personal injury or as a second opinion. Janine emphasizes the importance of objectivity: "I always check whether I have been involved in the treatment. If not, I perform the expertise. If I have, I ask a colleague. Independence is essential for a reliable judgment."
Objectivity and empathy
At Sazyes, we work according to a two-track model. First, the psychologist examines the background and request for help. Then the psychiatrist assesses the client, keeping that information in mind but with enough distance to remain independent.
"Most people I see have already gone through an intense journey. Their story deserves a careful and unbiased review," says Janine. "A good diagnosis starts with good listening as well as professional distance."
Misconceptions about psychiatric problems
Janine sees that there is still a lot of misunderstanding and stigma surrounding psychiatric disorders. "People are sometimes afraid to be open about their symptoms or medication. There are all kinds of prejudices, such as that medication changes your personality or that you are always stuck with a diagnosis. Also, people think they themselves are to blame for their illness, which is usually not true."
She emphasizes that a psychiatric illness does not mean a person cannot participate in society. "Work is important for many people for their sense of appreciation and meaning. Good expertise can help eliminate prejudice and make opportunities visible."
Keep listening
Despite her years of experience, Janine continues to be touched by the stories she hears. "I am still genuinely interested in people. Each story is unique and touches me. I promised myself: if that feeling ever disappears, I will stop doing this work."
Working at Sazyes
Janine experiences working at Sazyes as very valuable. "It is a committed, professional and dynamic environment. The colleagues are experienced specialists with a great passion for their profession. It's nice to be part of that."
