What does an insurance doctor actually do? Many people don't know exactly, or have the wrong idea. Some think an insurance doctor determines whether or not you can work. But is that really true? Insurance doctor Rawienderkumar of Sazyes gives an inside look at his profession and tells what it's really all about.

What does an insurance physician do?

An insurance physician assesses the taxability of someone who claims benefits, such as continued payment of wages during illness, WIA benefits or disability insurance (AOV). This is done carefully on the basis of his own research, information from practitioners and expert examinations by other specialists. The doctor records the findings in a Functional Capability List (FML), always in accordance with scientific guidelines and standards. This provides a clear and objective picture of what a person can and cannot do.

Misunderstandings about the profession

A common misconception is that an insurance doctor determines whether or not someone should be allowed to work. "That's not true," Rawienderkumar emphasizes. "I give medically based advice. It is up to employee, employer or insurer to determine what happens with it."

According to him, this includes not only medical knowledge, but also an eye for the human being. "You have to get to know the person to assess properly. Emotions that surface during conversations often provide valuable information. The challenge is to use those signals without losing yourself in the emotion."

People at the center

What does he get satisfaction from? "Helping people," sounds simple but powerful. "By providing clarity and direction, you can help someone move forward in a difficult situation." So his advice to anyone dealing with an insurance doctor is practical: "Prepare well, know what an insurance doctor does and ask questions - especially about roles, rights, duties and responsibilities."
